PsycInfo and PsycArticles Outage

Access to PsycINFO and PsycArticles from EBSCOhost is currently unavailable. GALILEO representatives are working with EBSCO to restore access as soon as possible.

NetLibrary access restored

The transition of netLibrary ebooks to the EBSCO ebook platform is complete. Catalog links to netLibrary ebooks and the database link to the netLibrary collection are now correctly pointing to EBSCO ebooks.

netLibrary access

Today, Thursday, July 21 2011, is the day that access to our netLibrary ebooks is being transitioned from the netLibrary interface to the EBSCO interface. Interruptions to access are likely as this transition occurs. Our vendors intend to minimize these interruptions, but they will not be avoided altogether. We expect access to the EBSCO ebook platform to be functioning normally at the start of next week.

FirstSearch database scheduled outage

On Sunday, July 10 there will be a scheduled service downtime for the FirstSearch service from 1:00 am until at least 6:00 am and possibly as late as 11:00 a.m. Eastern time. This temporary service interruption is required so OCLC can upgrade storage systems and capacity for all OCLC services.

GALILEO Search Problems

GALILEO has informed us that the GALILEO search utility is currently giving error messages. You can still access the resources you need, but by directly searching individual databases such as Academic Search Complete, JSTOR, etc. These can be found at http://tarver.mercer.edu/sources/list.php. To find specific e-journals, use the A to Z e-Journal Locator found at http://atoz.ebsco.com/titles.asp?Id=tarlis&sid=167430916&TabID=2

ScienceDirect to become SciVerse

Upcoming changes with EBSCO databases

As happens periodically EBSCO databases are updating the way their user interface looks.  Don't fear things aren't changing to much.

Here are the highlights of what will change over the next couple of days.

• The limiter and the date slider column will move from the right to the left of the Result List. For a look at the updated Result List, you can go to this link.
• Detailed record pages will be more streamlined, and links to full text and ILL buttons will be more prominently displayed on the left hand side of the record
• You'll be able to select multiple source types, such as books and articles, when narrowing down your result list.
• A "breadbox" will show users which limiters, expanders and source types have already been selected, and enable easy removal of these refinements.

The Bibliography of the History of Art

Tarver Library is pleased to announce the addition of The Bibliography of the History of Art (BHA) to our database listings. BHA, provided through GALILEO, is the world’s most comprehensive bibliography of scholarly writing about the history of western art.

BHA includes articles from over 1,200 journals. The following link leads to a list of names and ISSNs of each of those journals. Journals Included in BHA (PDF, 308 K) . BHA includes all articles within the subject scope of BHA regardless of the subject focus of a particular journal. Thus, many of the journals on this list are covered partially, as only some of their articles are within BHA’s scope.

BHA on the Getty Web site offers both basic and advanced search modules, and can be searched easily by subject, artist, author, article or journal title, and other elements. Note that the database search includes both BHA (covering 1990-2007) and the International Bibliography of Art (IBA), covering the years 2008 and part of 2009. The Répertoire de la litterature de l’art (RILA), one of the predecessors of BHA, with records that cover 1975-1989, will be online by May 1.

The Getty Research Institute has no plans to continue the databases into the future. It is a static resource. There are not any plans for the RAA data currently because that data is owned by the French INIST, not by the Getty.

EBSCO launches new PDF viewer

EBSCOhost, the platform of many of our favorite databases, has just been upgraded with a new PDF viewer.

"EBSCOhost features a special viewer designed to streamline the browsing of an entire issue, or all available volumes and issues, from one screen. There are also several helpful features to enable users to easily navigate and manage open PDFs, including:
• TOC column with instant access to citations with title, author and subject detail
• Hyperlinked access to full text issue contents, by article or chapter titles
• A convenient list of hyperlinked thumbnails to illustrations
• Expand/collapse arrow to control open PDF view"

The Atlanta Historic Newspapers Archive

Tarver Library is pleased to announce the addition of Atlanta Historic Newspapers Archive to our online databases.

An initiative of the Digital Library of Georgia, Atlanta Historic Newspapers Archive provides online access to fourteen newspaper titles published in Atlanta from 1847 to 1922. Consisting of over 67,000 newspaper pages, the archive provides historical images that are both full-text searchable and can be browsed by date. The site will provide users with a record of Atlanta's history from its origins as a railroad terminus, through the devastation of the Civil War, to its eventual growth into one of the nation's largest cities.

The archive includes the following Atlanta newspaper titles:

• Atlanta Daily Examiner (1857),
• Atlanta Daily Herald (1873-1876),
• Atlanta Georgian (1906-1911),
• Atlanta Intelligencer (1851, 1854-1871),
• Atlantian (1911-1922),
• Daily/Georgia Weekly Opinion (1867-1868),
• Gate-City Guardian (1861),
• Georgia Literary and Temperance Crusader (1860-1861),
• New Era (1869-1872), Southern Confederacy (1861-1864),
• Southern Miscellany, and Upper Georgia Whig (1847),
• Southern World (1882-1885),
• Sunny South (1875-1907),
• Weekly Constitution (1869-1882).

Access to the archive is available through the library database listing or GALILEO Scholar.

Georgia Health Go Local Discontinued

Due to State-wide budget challenges, GALILEO is unable to continue offering the health resource Georgia Health Go Local. It has been removed from Tarver and Centers' database listings and GALILEO Scholar profiles.

Other subscription health resources will remain available under the Consumer Health subject heading in GALILEO:

ScienceDirect Outage

ScienceDirect will be unavailable due to scheduled maintenance for approximately 8.5 hours during the period from 10:30PM EST on Saturday 13, March to 08:00AM EDT Sunday 14, March.

Problems accessing e-journals in Consumer Health Complete through A to Z E-journal Locator

Currently, it is not possible to access e-journals in Consumer Health Complete through the A to Z E-journal Locator. GALILEO has been informed and is working with the vendor, EBSCO, to resolve the problem. You can reach an alternative interface to the database by using this link: http://www.galileo.usg.edu/express?link=zbch.

Upon entering the interface, try searching for your article title or topic.

When the traditional interface is restored and access through A to Z E-journal Locator is functioning, a follow-up message will be posted.

Lost Access to SpringerLink

This afternoon, access to e-journals on the SpringerLink interface has been interrupted. The vendor has been informed and is working to restore access as soon as possible. This affects all e-journals in the SpringerLink GETSM collection. An update to this post will be made when access is restored.

Browser warning messages

Recently, Tarver Library had to upgrade the electronic certificates which confirm that our server is a "safe" place to which you can connect. Unfortunately, several major browsers do not currently recognize the latest version of this certificate. This means that when you try to connect to any database with "https://" at the beginning of the URL you may receive a serious sounding warning from your Web browser such as "Untrusted Connection" or something related to the certificate issuer not being recognized.

If you experience such a message and you are linking to a subscription database from the library Web site or linking from one part of a subscription database to another part (e.g. inside Ebrary, trying to log into your personal account), you are safe to make an exception and continue past the warning. This is not recommended for links that take you out of a subscription database to the open Web.

As browsers are updated, as they regularly are, these warnings should cease over time. Please don't hesitate to contact the reference librarian (478.301.2055) for assistance.

Books in Print

Tarver Library is pleased to announce a university-wide subscription to Bowker's Books in Print, a premier collection development tool. Books in Print is useful for researching information about available and forthcoming books for curricula, personal study and entertainment, building the libraries' collections, and for new academic programs. Access can be found both in the library's database listing and on the GALILEO interface.

ACM Digital Library

Jack Tarver Library is pleased to announce a university-wide subscription to the Association for Computing Machinery's Digital Library.

The ACM Digital Library is a collection of all ACM print and online publications. It provides bibliographic information, abstracts, reviews and full text for virtually all ACM journals, magazines, and proceedings.

Tarver Library's subscription to DL Core Package, DL Master SIG Package and the Guide includes:

• ACM DL Core Package, with 19 journals and magazines and 26 transactions.
• ACM DL Master SIG (Special Interest Group) Package, with more than 85 conference proceedings and all SIG newsletters
• The ACM Online Guide to Computing Literature ("the Guide"), a database of 850,000 bibliographic citations expanding beyond ACM's literature.

Dissertations and Theses Full Text

Tarver Library is pleased to announce that our Dissertations Abstracts database has just been upgraded to the Dissertations and Theses – Full Text database.

ProQuest Dissertations and Theses — Full text is the world's most comprehensive collection of dissertations and theses and is the official digital dissertations archive for the Library of Congress and the database of record for graduate research. PQDT — Full Text includes 2.4 million searchable citations to dissertation and theses from around the world from 1861 to the present day together with 1.2 million full text dissertations that are available for download in PDF format. The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full text coverage for older graduate works.

More than 60,000 new full text dissertations and theses are added to the database each year through dissertations publishing partnerships with 700 leading academic institutions worldwide and collaborative retrospective digitization of dissertations through UMI's Digital Archiving and Access Program. Full Text dissertations are archived as submitted by the degree-granting institution. Some will be native PDF, some PDF image.

Each dissertation published since July 1980 includes a 350-word abstract written by the author. Master's theses published since 1988 include 150-word abstracts. Simple bibliographic citations are available for dissertations dating from 1637. Where available, PQDT — Full Text provides 24-page previews of dissertations and theses.

Today is Columbus Day

Columbus Day is the annual U.S. commemoration of Christopher Columbus's landing in the New World (at San Salvador Island, also known as Waitling Island, today part of the British Bahamas) on October 12, 1492.

This Day in History on Britannica Online, which Tarver library has access to (Encyclopædia Britannica Online), describes Columbus Day as "the New World was “discovered” this day in 1492 when land (most likely San Salvador) was sighted in the Caribbean from the Pinta, one of the three ships that participated in Christopher Columbus's historic first voyage. "
