I'm sure by now you've noticed that today, Wed. January 18, that Wikipedia is blacked out and that Google has a blacked out logo and maybe some other favorite sites are blacked out as well or have messages about SOPA & PIPA. So what is SOPA & PIPA you're asking? Well that's a very good question.
Both bills are basically about stopping copyright infringement on the web and give the US power to take some action against it, including blocking those sites in the US and not letting those sites receive payment for their work. And while that sounds like a good thing, many in the tech community (such as Wikipedia, Google, reddit, Icanhazcheeseburger, and legal experts) are worried that its broad language will create censorship and reduce the web to almost nothing. Backers of the bill on the other hand (such as CNN and the Movie Picture Association) believe that the bill will help protect their interests. So who's right?
Well that's up to you to create your own opinion. This post from Digital Trends has a great explanation of what the bills are, why there's an uproar, and answers some of the common questions that people have. The annual GALILEO user survey is a way to rate your experience using GALILEO, and this year, it’s also an opportunity to enter a drawing for an iPad. The end of the semester and the holidays are fast approaching which means that libraries begin to slow down lending books through Interlibrary Loan (ILL).
As such, we will no longer request books through ILL for students after Monday, November 28 until after the spring semester begins. We will continue to request articles through ILL until December 20 when we will close for the semester.
Please stop by the reference desk or contact us through one of our many AskUs points, if we can help you find materials for your papers or assignments.

Applications for the 2011/2012 Annual Valerie B. Edmonds Student Research Award are due by 5 p.m. on Monday, February 13. Individuals must be currently enrolled as undergraduate students at Mercer University (Macon campus) or the Macon Regional Academic Center. As of October 17, we no longer offer reference desk services after 5:00 PM, except on Sunday when we are available from 2-9 PM. The transition of netLibrary ebooks to the EBSCO ebook platform is complete. Catalog links to netLibrary ebooks and the database link to the netLibrary collection are now correctly pointing to EBSCO ebooks.

Today, Thursday, July 21 2011, is the day that access to our netLibrary ebooks is being transitioned from the netLibrary interface to the EBSCO interface. Interruptions to access are likely as this transition occurs. Our vendors intend to minimize these interruptions, but they will not be avoided altogether. We expect access to the EBSCO ebook platform to be functioning normally at the start of next week.
On Sunday, July 10 there will be a scheduled service downtime for the FirstSearch service from 1:00 am until at least 6:00 am and possibly as late as 11:00 a.m. Eastern time. This temporary service interruption is required so OCLC can upgrade storage systems and capacity for all OCLC services.
