Featured Government Website in December

TSA.gov (The Transportation Security Administration)

With the holiday season already in full swing, travel safety and security is on everybody's mind. The Transportation Security Administration, a US government agency, addresses all your travel concerns by protecting the Nation's transportation systems to ensure freedom of movement for people and commerce.

The TSA web site provides detailed information for travelers, including the 3-1-1 liquid policy, acceptable forms of identification, traveling with special items, prohibited items, new security measures for international travel, and information on pat-downs (what triggers a pat-down, what happens during a pat-down and what you can do to prevent a pat-down).

Recently TSA has released Helpful Hints for Holiday Travelers, which includes a video address by TSA Administrator John Pistole.

You may also be interested in TSA Latest News, Media Room, and Research Center. The most commonly requested TSA information is now accessible 24/7 via passengers' mobile devices through MyTSA Mobile Application. You can subscribe to TSA RSS feeds and also follow TSA updates on Blogger, Twitter, and Youtube.

Tarver Library Open 24/7 during finals week

In response to a SGA request initiated in spring 2010, Tarver Library will be open 24/7 for final exams week beginning Sunday, December 12 at 2 p.m. and ending Saturday, December 18 at 7 p.m. Bear Cards are required by all who enter the library between midnight and 7:45 a.m. Staff will be available to monitor and maintain access to the library. No library services will be offered during this time period.

Help us determine the value of being a depository library

Since 1964, Jack Tarver Library has participated in the Federal Depository Library Program(FDLP) established by the United States Congress to ensure that the American public has access to its Government's information. It is vital that the value of being a depository library be addressed. To determine this value, The Depository Library User Survey has now been released. We would like to understand user perceptions of the value and performance of libraries participating in the FDLP.

Please take a few minutes to complete this brief eighteen-question survey, which should only take 10 to 15 minutes of your time. Answers you provide will be treated as strictly confidential and will be collected in an anonymous and an aggregated format.

Thank you for taking the time to fill out this survey by the end of February, 2011. Your input is greatly appreciated!

A new ILL system is coming in January!

The library is switching to a new Interlibrary Loan (ILL) system in January 2011.  The system is called ILLiad, and it will streamline your ILL requests for articles, books, and other information resources.  For example, using ILLiad you can check on the status of your requests, request renewals, access articles you requested, and review the history of your ILL requests.

Within ILLiad you can submit and review requests, change your profiles, and receive electronically delivered documents.  You will have easy online access to your ILL articles in ILLiad --  no more multiple e-mails with attached articles!  Everything is viewable right there in your account.

Once we switch to the new system you will have to use your ILLiad account to place your ILL requests.  We will no longer be able to accept requests via email, phone, or paper.

Curious about what else ILLiad is?  Here’s a brief FAQ page:  http://mercer.illiad.oclc.org/illiad/GMU/FAQ.html

We will provide more details on creating and logging into your accounts soon.  If you have any questions please contact Andrew Shuping at shuping_ad@mercer.edu or 478-301-2251.

Cutoff for requesting books via Interlibrary Loan

The end of the semester and the holidays are fast approaching and other libraries are being to slow down lending items to us.

As such, we have to put in place a cutoff date for requesting Interlibrary Loan (ILL) books for students.  This deadline is tomorrow, Friday Dec. 2.  After this date we will not be able to process any more ILL requests for books until the beginning of the Spring Semester in January.  We will continue to process article requests until Dec. 20th when ILL will close for the semester.

If you need help finding materials for your paper please stop by the reference desk or contact us through one of our many AskUs points and we'll be glad to help you out.

If you have any questions please contact Andrew Shuping at shuping_ad@mercer.edu or 301-2251.

And thank you for using Interlibrary Loan this Semester.

The Divine Image in Everyday Life: Religion in the Ancient Near East

An Exhibit From the Collection of Yulssus Lynn Holmes

The religious legacy of the Ancient Near East is the Abrahamic tradition (of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam), the theology of which identifies a God who created the world but is apart from it. Not so the older religions of the region. They envisioned divine, superhuman entities as the forces of nature and of human nature. The sea god made the tides rise and fall; a couple fell in love only at the will of the goddess of love. Religion was everywhere and in everything. This exhibit contains artifacts created for daily prayers and specific rituals, others made for practical use but decorated to invoke a god or express its power. Still others, some special, some commonplace, were chosen to accompany the dead into the afterlife. Everyday objects like statuettes, charms, lamps, pottery, and even coins, all reveal how religion pervaded life – and death – for the people of the Ancient Near East.

Visit Tarver Library to view these artifacts located in the display case next to the Chappell Classroom on the main (2nd) floor.

Hubble 2009: Science Year in Review

Hubble Science Year in Review is an annual collection of essays and images designed to share the year's most important Hubble science, as determined by astronomers. The essays go into detail about the research, and can thus provide greater context than the typical news release. Each edition is released in the following year — for example, the 2009 book was released in 2010, and the 2008 book in 2009.

These volumes provide only a highlighted selection of the year's discoveries and center on topics rather than on individual news items. For the complete collection of Hubble news and more specifically focused information, visit NewsCenter. For the best selection of Hubble images, visit Gallery.

Tarver Library has a print copy of this document in its government documents collection. Please view the record to Hubble 2009 as part of the Hubble ... Science Year in Review series. You can access the 2006, 2007, and 2008 editions of the series through the official Hubble web site.

Squeaks Discovers Type: How Print Has Expanded Our Universe (Comic Book)

This book is the first original comic book that is published by GPO and it teaches kids about the history of print.

Squeaks Discovers Type! is the story of a video game space mouse who helps an elementary school student Jake discover the invention of printing and its evolution through the ages so Jake can write a report.

The value of this book is that it tells the "story of printing, which is really the story of the profound impact of printing on the dissemination of information worldwide, [it] needs to be better understood, especially in the context of a digital age. Although our comic book is aimed at kids, its message is for everybody" (GovernmentBookTalk).

Please preview selected spreads from the comic book. You can get this book through the GPO Bookstore

The Condition of Education 2010

The Condition of Education 2010 covers all aspects of education, with 49 indicators that include findings on enrollment trends, demographics, and outcomes.

"The Condition of Education 2010 consists of five sections of indicators, as well as an additional “special section” that examines high-poverty schools using data drawn from various indicators in the volume. Each section begins with a summary of the general topic areas covered by the indicators in the section. Each indicator consists of a page with key findings and technical notes, one or two figures and/or tables on the adjacent page, and one or more supplemental tables, found in appendix A. The supplemental tables feature the estimates used in the indicator discussion as well as additional estimates related to the indicator."

Tarver Library has a print copy of this document in its government documents collection. Or you can just view the link to The Condition of Education 2010 in Brief.

Do you have my textbook?

It’s the time of year when we get a lot of questions textbooks, so before you come and ask “Does the library have my textbook?” let me save you some time and say...probably not. And the next question is "Can we get textbooks through Interlibrary Loan (ILL)" and the answer is....no.

I know, I know it sounds really mean, but we do have good reasons for this so if you keep reading for a bit I'll give you a brief explanation.

We usually don’t purchase textbooks because they are really expensive and the publishers push out new editions so often that books become obsolete very quickly.  If we purchased every textbook for every class we wouldn't be able to buy all of the other books you may need for your research or anything else.  While you may find a book that's being used for your course, its very rare and its likely an older out of date edition, meaning that page numbers and information would likely not match up with the information your professor wants you to have.

Students also ask us if we can get their textbooks on Interlibrary Loan (ILL). The answer is no.  Just as we don't buy the textbooks most other libraries don't buy textbooks.  Even more important its frowned upon in ILL to borrow textbooks as it puts other libraries at a disadvantage and generally goes against ILL rules (there are a set of rules nationwide that govern ILL policy.)  Please don't ask and please don't make the request for your textbooks via Interlibrary Loan because it could hinder our ability to get other books from libraries.

So while we appreciate your visits to the library and we want you to get your books and information here, but we don't intentionally purchase textbooks and we can't borrow them through Interlibrary Loan.

ScienceDirect to become SciVerse

News from Elsevier:

"Elsevier is integrating the world's most trusted scientific content from ScienceDirect and Scopus into a single platform with productivity-driving enhancements. Learn how you can leverage this powerful tool to accelerate your research.

In August, ScienceDirect, Scopus and the targeted web content from Scirus will be integrated within one platform - SciVerse. SciVerse will combine trusted content with an expanding universe of tools that accelerate search and discovery. Over time, SciVerse will form the core of an ecosystem in which researchers and librarians work with publishers and developers to build collections of applications targeted to the specific interests and workflows of researchers, increasing the value you derive from your subscribed content.

See what's coming - Our four minute video provides an overview of the next release of your Elsevier subscribed products.

As our Accelerating Science video explains, the August release of SciVerse will:

* Deliver de-duplicated results from a single search across your licensed ScienceDirect, Scopus and Scirus products
* Feature three free applications to enhance search and discovery, including one that allows you to search only the methods/experimental procedures sections of the articles in ScienceDirect

Over subsequent releases, SciVerse will:

* Give you access to content APIs that allow you and other members of the scientific community to develop applications
* Enable researchers to establish a trusted social network of colleagues that will help them filter information

Upcoming changes with EBSCO databases

As happens periodically EBSCO databases are updating the way their user interface looks.  Don't fear things aren't changing to much.

Here are the highlights of what will change over the next couple of days.

  • The limiter and the date slider column will move from the right to the left of the Result List. For a look at the updated Result List, you can go to this link.
  • Detailed record pages will be more streamlined, and links to full text and ILL buttons will be more prominently displayed on the left hand side of the record
  • You'll be able to select multiple source types, such as books and articles, when narrowing down your result list.
  • A "breadbox" will show users which limiters, expanders and source types have already been selected, and enable easy removal of these refinements.

If you have any questions about the changes please contact us and we'll do our best to answer your questions.

DATA.gov is a resource designed to increase public access to valuable, machine readable datasets generated by the Executive Branch of the Federal Government. Data are values or sets of values representing a specific concept or concepts. Data.gov includes searchable catalogs that provide access to "raw" datasets and various tools. In the "raw" data catalog, you may access data in XML, Text/CSV, KML/KMZ, Feeds, XLS, or ESRI Shapefile formats. State and Metropolitan Area Data Book: 2010
A Statistical Abstract Supplement

The State and Metropolitan Area Data Book (SMADB) is the highly respected companion report to the Census Bureau's Statistical Abstract of the United States. While the Statistical Abstract provides general social, political, and economic data for the U.S. as a whole, the SMA Data Book contains similar information, but focuses on the local areas -- States, metropolitan areas, and micropolitan areas of the United States.

The Data Book is designed to serve as a statistical reference and guide to other statistical publications and sources. It includes a selection of data from statistical publications and electronic sources, both government and private. Although emphasis is primarily given to state and metropolitan area data, U.S. totals and data for component counties and central cities are also provided.

This edition of the State and Metropolitan Area Data Book features more than 1,500 data items for the United States and individual states, counties and metropolitan areas from a variety of sources. Topics include age, agriculture, births, business establishments, communications, construction, cost of living, crime, deaths, education, elections, employment, energy, finance, government, health and households.

In addition to its extensive tables, the report includes maps, source notes, and appendixes. You can find the full text of the book on the U. S. Census Bureau web site.

Interrogation: World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq

This book from the National Defense Intelligence College takes both an historical and policy-oriented view of prisoner of war interrogations in three wars. The World War II section examines the Army’s use of Japanese Americans – Nisei – as interrogators in the Pacific region. This part also analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the Army and Navy Japanese language training provided during the war.

The Vietnam section focuses on profiles of the most able interrogators in World War II and the war in Vietnam. The authors see excellent linguistic ability, a deep understanding of the captives’ culture, and a perception that torture is useless in soliciting information as key for successful interrogation of prisoners.

The final section, on Iraq, focuses on policy issues – specifically, whether Army doctrine should permit Special Operations personnel to interrogate prisoners. As in previous sections, personal examples and real-world examples constitute the most exciting and compelling part of the read.

You can find the full text of the book here.
